Who can remain unmoved by a country whose extreme and diverse beauty is matched only by the joyous hospitality of her people?
With thousands of islands, scattered over the Aegean and Ionian seas, Greece lures holidaymakers and sailors from across the world, capturing their souls.
Her magic is everywhere, from wonderful ancient architecture, most famous being the Acropolis in Athens, and romantic olive groves, to fabulous beaches with warm, clear blue waters just perfect for swimming in; all bathed in that special light beloved by artists.
In 2009, an impressive 425 beaches and 8 marinas in Greece were awarded the “Blue Flag” for their standards of cleanliness; this achievement alone puts them among the most inviting in Europe.
Freshly prepared Greek dishes of roasted lamb, grilled fish, souvlaki, spanakopita and moussaka, to name but a few, are especially divine eaten to the sounds of gently lapping sea under a starlit sky; while national drink Ouzo is guaranteed to add fire to the belly.
The Greeks have a word, kefi, for the overwhelming feeling which has to be expressed in singing, dancing, or even plate smashing. Visitors are irresistibly drawn in and onto the dance floor, with its echoing cries of ‘Opai’!
While mainland resorts and some islands have developed as popular tourist spots, less than 300 of the 6,000 islands and islets are inhabited; many remain secret, open only to those who choose to sail her waters.
Good food, drink, company, these are the simple Greek pleasures and ones which you are invited to share, even if your attempts at the language depend on how many glasses of ouzo you have taken.
